BESS wins big by securing over 2.5 GW in secured contracts

The clearing price makes gas projects uneconomical, giving way to BESS to secure more contracts
Conducted by Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE), the capacity market (CM) auction for 2029 just concluded after awarding over 12 GW of CM projects, scheduled to start in 2029. The CM has been a big driver of the grid-scale energy storage market in Poland
The closing price at the end of the event was PLN 264.90/ kW ($65/ kW) per year. With such pricing, gas projects stand to become uneconomical, paving the way for battery storage systems to secure contracts.
While the final results will be announced in January 2025, the inside talk is that about 2.5 GW of the 12 GW will be awarded to battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects. Notable developers and IPPs with winning energy storage projects this year include Axpo, OX2, R.Power, FRV, European Energy and power producer PGE (Polska Grupa Energetyczna), the latter owned by the Government of Poland.
Last year, Poland's Energy Regulatory Office reported awarding less than 6 TWh out of around 88 TWh of green energy to be contracted for the country's Renewable Energy Auction 2023 with solar energy winning over 98% of 200 projects selected (see Poland Concludes 2023 Renewable Energy Auction).
