EVLO Energy Storage Inc, a wholly-owned unit of Canadian utility Hydro-Quebec, has commissioned a 3-MW/12-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the United States, the company announced on Tuesday.
Situated in the town of Troy, Vermont, the project marked the completion of EVLO’s first utility-scale BESS in the country.
The Troy site features 16 EVLO 1000 units and four power conversion systems, all managed by the EVLOGIX energy management system. EVLO will monitor and maintain the BESS under a 20-year long-term service agreement. This task will be done in partnership with Vermont utilities including the Vermont Electric Cooperative, which serves the town of Troy, the Quebecois company said.
The project included a USD-2-million (EUR 1.8m) cost-share partnership with the US Department of Energy (DoE) through Sandia National Laboratories’ Electrical Energy Storage Demonstration Projects programme, EVLO said in earlier announcement. Now online, the Troy BESS will provide data to the DoE and Sandia National Laboratories to demonstrate how batteries can enable the expansion of renewable energy production, while further integrating renewables into the New England grid.
