Aqunion, a global leader in abalone farming and a subsidiary of the Sea Harvest Group, has embraced solar energy as part of its sustainability strategy through a partnership with Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS). This innovative collaboration sets a new benchmark for sustainable aquaculture, showcasing how advanced renewable energy solutions can significantly reduce operational costs and emissions.

Faced with rising electricity costs and frequent load-shedding, Aqunion sought a reliable energy source to power its operations. “Our abalone farming requires a constant, stable power supply to maintain optimal conditions,” said Rowan Yearsley, CEO of Aqunion. “SPS provided a comprehensive solar and battery energy storage solution that aligns perfectly with our sustainability goals.”

SPS, an expert in renewable energy systems, designed a microgrid solution tailored to Aqunion’s needs. The system includes a solar array capable of supplying 22% of the farm’s annual energy, complemented by a battery storage system that provides up to four hours of backup power. “Our focus was on delivering reliability and cost efficiency while reducing reliance on diesel generators,” explained Johan Wolmarans, Senior Energy Storage Specialist at SPS.

Construction of the solar system began in November 2023, with panels installed over abalone tanks in a custom-engineered setup designed to withstand the harsh coastal environment. SPS secured the project through a competitive tender process, offering a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that eliminated upfront capital costs for Aqunion.

Aqunion expects a significant reduction in energy costs and a projected increase in renewable energy use from 10% to 30%. “This collaboration not only enhances our operational efficiency but also strengthens our commitment to environmental sustainability,” Yearsley noted.

As the project moves toward full operation, Aqunion and SPS are poised to lead the way in eco-friendly aquaculture, setting new standards for sustainability in the industry.
